I Gotta Do Better

At checking in on my loved ones both near and far

At giving more hugs
At smiling  at strangers
At saying my prayers every night and morning

At giving thanks for all that I have
At saying “I Love You” more
At checking in with the people in my network
At being the best “mentor” I can be
At making better financial decisions
At letting “Shit” go
At using the magic words, “please” and “thank you”
At not taking things so personal
At being a better listener
At being a better daughter, niece and friend
At giving back to the community
At being honest about how I am feeling in the moment
At getting more rest

At putting me first
At removing people from my life who stunt my growth
At finding the beauty in the struggle
At loving people who at times are not so lovable
When we open our eyes and breathe air into our lungs, we are blessed with an opportunity to be better than yesterday. Never take it for granted.❤️

The Last Goodbye

My heart is very sad today. I learned that a childhood friend of mine has passed away. And yes we know of so many that the Lord has taken to be with him but this hits home.
Upon my last interaction with him I learned that he was going to be a father. I saw the excitement in his eyes as he shared his life changing news. We had gathered to celebrate his sister’s baby shower. My heart was excited for him. He was not only transitioning into a man but a father. We laughed, took photos and I congratulated him on his new chapter to fatherhood. But sadly, this chapter will never be opened.

Just last week I met up with his sister who is a dear friend of mine. She just attended his baby shower earlier that evening. Who would have known 11/7/15 would have been her last goodbye?
I wrote something for him. I hope he is listening:

“To my friend, I never thought it would be your time to leave this earth. I never thought we would be taking our last group photo that rainy and humid day in June. You were loved by so many, including your child. He might not have met you but he was aware of your presence. Your spirit will cover him and he will be reminded of who you are through the memories of your family and friends. Your legacy will live on through him. I know God has made space for you in his kingdom and that you are enjoying your new home. This wont be easy for your family but I will be of support for them during this tough time. This is not a “Goodbye” but more like “See You Later”. You will forever have a place in my heart. Until we meet again my friend.”❤️

Save Your Soul

The same care we put into protecting our devices should be put into taking care of our souls.
We here it all the time. “Take care of yourself” but what really goes into doing that? I mean yes we are told to exercise, eat clean, get rest, mediate and even take up yoga. All these things are suppose to help give us a better mind and body. But what about our soul? What are we doing to cultivate a better soul? Are we examining those around us? Do they have an impact on the state of our soul?

Let me be the first to answer this question for you: YES.

You would be surprised how the thoughts, actions and behaviors of others can infiltrate and impede on the growth of our soul. The people that we sometimes “befriend” are responsible for the way we treat others. We start to pick up the actions, thoughts and mannerisms of the people around us. They can take us to the highest heights or 6 feet under.

It is important as we prepare for another season that we leave some people behind. We all know who needs to stay and who needs to go. So take the time to examine, filter and screen those who enter your “soul sanctuary”. It’s precious, sacred, valuable and beautiful. Treat your soul how you treat your “selfies”. Pick wisely those who you surround yourself with, your soul depends on it. ❤️
